Case-XII   Bitter Success
Background

Kanti Prasad of Tilothi village in Hathras district used to spend his life toiling soil on his 0.6 acre of land. He was a part of the large unorganized farmers family and was trying to produce crops to support his family of three sons and a daughter, but the same was not sufficient to meet his needs.
Emergence of Idea
He came in contact with Aseed when the organization was promoting diversified agricultural practices to increase the quality and quantity of the yield. Like many other farmers with small landholdings, Kanti Prasad also got associated with Aseed who guided them on all the aspects including the formation of SHGs. Kanti was able to grab the idea where the local bodies are empowered to solve their financial problems all by themselves.
Initiation of Action

He joined an SHG and took active part in its activities. The group, which was mainly formed for monetary purpose, started maturing as a social body as well where members can share things and move collectively towards attaining knowledge related to gardening, seed production, etc. Aseed district coordinator also arranged for an exposure visit to the Krishi Melas in the nearby areas, which gave an opportunity to know about the modern techniques used for agriculture and imparting information about cash crops. Kanti bought hybrid seeds of wheat. He was attracted towards Amla, as maybe he could see his future there.
Generation of Support

After returning from the exposure visits, Kanti concentrated on the production of hybrid seeds. He was provided with all the relevant information and support by the field functionaries. Aseed provided farmers with foundation seeds and motivated them to grow Amla and Ber. Master Trainers from Kisan Vidyalaya, Bhojgari were arranged to train. Kanti came to know about the technique of growing Amla through the budding technique from this training. The problem of initial investment was sorted out by taking loan from the SHG. The yield got him the money that was worth his labour. He got an opportunity to undergo a number of trainings at various training institutes and the Agriculture Dept. of the district which helped him acquire more knowledge about the modern methods of agriculture. He was also motivated to use organic manure. He started making NADEP manure, CPP and vermi-compost. The yield, which Kanti got this time, was much better both in quality and quantity. Driven by the success, Kanti focussed on the production of these manures on his own which saved him a lot of money.
Recognition
Kanti's success and dedication led Aseed to project him as the Community Consultant and shared his knowledge with other farmers in the area. He trained 50 farmers in Amla cultivation. Following in his footsteps, other farmers also came forward to grow Amla.

Kanti Prasad is one of the farmers whose products are selected by the company due to good quality of the yield. He gets full credit for popularizing Amla as a cash crop in the area. He is still associated with the SHG as the local body is now empowered enough to solve the monetary matters of its members. Kanti is now in a position to dream big.
