Women Empowerment and Micro Credit Assistance
  From our experience at the grassroots and at the planning level, we have come to the conclusion that access to assets is the single most urgent need for the upliftment of rural women. The women still don't have control over the ancestral property and any say in the domestic decisions, due to which they can't take independent decisions on various agricultural aspects despite the fact that they make a substantial contribution to agricultural development and their access to the most crucial input "credit" is limited.

The capacity building programme for the SHG members followed this in fortnightly/weekly meetings of the clusters and SHGs. Moreover, proposals for different activities were formulated based on the desires expressed by the groups and all the information and reports were sent to the State Institute of Management of Agriculture (SIMA).

Diversified Agriculture

For farmers, the transition to sustainable agriculture normally requires a series of small, realistic steps in family economics, personal goals etc. Each small decision contributes towards advancing the entire system further on the "sustainable agriculture continuum". Sustainable production practices involve a variety of approaches. Specific strategies must take into account topography, soil characteristics, climate, pests, local availability of inputs and the individual grower's goals. Despite the site-specific and individual nature of sustainable agriculture, several general principles can be applied to help growers select appropriate management practices such as :

  • Selection of species and varities that are well suited to the site and to conditions on the farm;
  • Diversification of crops (including livestock) and cultural practices to enhance the biological and    economic stability of the farm;
  • Management of soil to enhance and project soil quality;
  • Effective and humane use of inputs; and
  • Consideration of farmer's goals and lifestyle choices.

    Environment and Ecology

    Economic development without environmental considerations can cause serious environmental damage, in turn impairing the quality of life of the present and future generations. Sustainable development attempts to strike a balance between the demands of economic development and the need for protection of environment. It seeks to combine the elements of economic efficiency, intergenerational equity, social concerns and environmental protection.
      Most economic activities involve transformation of resources from their original locations and natural forms to locations where they are used as final products. The environmental costs occur in the form of -

  • larger expenditure on healthcare, provision of protected water supply and maintenance of assets,
  • an increase in the application of resources to achieve a given basket of output over time in order to    compensate for the decline in the quality of resources,
  • reduction in expenditure incurred by producers,
  • defensive expenditure incurred by consumers, and
  • administrative expenses.
  •
    The main activity areas of Aseed for the above are environmental awareness and conservation education, training for skill transfer, aforestation and horticulture, soil and moisture conservation, animal husbandry, appropriate energy technologies and liaisoning with the government and NGOs. Properly managed organic farming reduces or eliminates soil and water pollution and helps conserve water and soil on agricultural lands. Organic farming is one of the several approaches to sustainable agriculture.
      » Community Forestry :-

    In Haryana the community forestry project (European Union) which Aseed was being implemented since 2002, covering 20 villages in five blocks of Haryana and has formed 37 self-reliant SHGs (including three of men) capacity of rural communities, was undertaken to improve the natural environment and maintain land fertility through sustainable management of natural resources. 11 farmer workshops were organized to do so. Apart from that, skill training to 100 women about the various allied agricultural IGA or the other As part of the IEC strategy, 15 theme camps and two exposure visits were organized benefiting nearly 600 women. The savings of women crossed the figure of Rs. 6 lakh in six months and there was inter-loaning of Rs. 9 lakh.
