NHAI
has undertaken the project of upgrading the existing
NH-28 to four lane standard from Lucknow via Chapra
to Muzaffarpur. It intends to launch an HIV-AIDS awareness
campaign along the said segment of NH-28 covering the
population residing along the highway or using it. It
also envisages to enhance the level of awareness and
knowledge of all stakeholders, on HIV/AIDS, residing
in the nearby village areas, operating in the area,
running business along the highway or otherwise influencing
the behavior of the people who are most vulnerable and
belong to high-risk groups because of their unsafe sexual
behaviors. |

The
project envisages to achieve the following objectives
within 3 years. |

The
populations residing along with the said segment of the
NH-28, particularly 1 KM, away from the road should be
made aware of the HIV and AIDS. |

» |
To
identify the most vulnerable group and their behavior
and life style to devise appropriate strategy for bringing
a positive change towards a better and healthy life
style. |

» |
To
help the target population adapt to safe sexual behavior
and take up the life style which may ensure a better
health and happy life for themselves through awareness
development. |

» |
To
facilitate access by local communities to condoms, medical
care services, voluntary counseling centers for treatment
of STDs and diagnosis of HIV/AIDS. |

» |
To
educate the opinion leaders who can influence the behavior
of the target population and also help them bring a
positive change in their behavior. |

To
develop technical capacities of agencies delivering
HIV/AIDS related activities in the project area. |
| |
» |
To
rehabilitate the patients within their families itself
to the extent possible and also link them with the existing
facilities and medical care services created by the
Govt. Agencies and NGOs working towards similar objectives
in the area. |

The
approaches of the project is to ensure awareness through
campaigning and education with different stakeholders
in order to eradicate HIV/AIDS. The following elements

target stakeholders and key behaviours to be influenced

survey of at least 1000 beneficiaries to determine the
health profile and level of knowledge on HIV/AIDS in
a few areas. |
