Disaster Management We have set up a centre for disaster management under the Aidmat.
This includes Flood relief, Earth quake and Tsunami (Studies and Research and training)
a. Bihar Flood
Background :-
The 2008 Bihar flood, which is one of the worst floods in
the history of the Indian state of Bihar, occurred due to a breach
in the Kosi embankment near Indo-Nepal border (at a place called
Kusha in Nepal) on August 18, 2008. The river changed its course
and inundated areas which hadn't experienced floods in last many decades.
The flood affected over 2.3 million people in the northern part of Bihar.
On, 18 August 2008, due to preceding heavy monsoon rains,
there was a breach in the embankments of the Kosi River, north
of a dam in Nepal. About 1, 29,800 cusec water was discharged
through the breach inundating hundreds of villages in north Bihar
districts of Supaul, Araria, Madhepura and Purnea. The flood submerged
most of the Kosi alluvial fan area, which is very fertile and has dense
agrarian population. The breach caused colossal loss of life and property
in the south east tarai region of Nepal and in six districts of north Bihar,
affecting more than 2.5 million human lives.Kosi river flows north to south,
from Himalayas in Nepal & Tibet to Ganges in Bihar state of India. Usually due
to heavy silt deposition, the river keeps taking longer curvilinear path to
drain into Ganges. Due to this, the river had shifted its course in the last
300 years. After the breach, the river has shifted its course nearly 100 kilometres
eastward from its earlier course (which use to pass through the districts of Supaul,
Saharsa, Madhubani, Darbhanga and Khagaria)
Aseed-IDMAT Interventions :-
Aseed-IDMAT has been in the fore front to extend their emergency training

Aseed also donated fund to the Chief Minister's Fund for fast recovery and
rehabilitation of the flood affective areas.
b. Gujarat EarthQuake
Background:-
The Gujarat earthquake of January 26, 2001 generated intense shaking which was
felt by about 70 % people of India. The intense shaking brought out changes in the ocean and
land surface and subsurface. At numerous places, emergence of water on the earth's
surface brought hope among people about the future availability of drinking water in Gujarat.
The fear and loss is still felt among the people surviving the disaster.
Aseed-IDMAT Interventions
Gujarat EarthQuake that occurred in 2001 gave ASEED-IDMAT, lot of challenges that
required more number of training initiaives which was given to the various clients, NGOs,
agnecies during the catostrophe. Aseed-IDMAT, trained on various topic like rescue, relief,
recovery and rehabilitation processes, trauma handling, building confidence etc.

Background:-
The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred
at 00:58:53 UTC on December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra,
Indonesia. The quake itself is known by the scientific community as the Great Sumatra-Andaman
earthquake. The resulting tsunami itself is given various names, including the 2004 Indian Ocean
tsunami, Asian Tsunami, Indonesian Tsunami, and Boxing Day Tsunami. The earthquake was caused
by subduction and triggered a series of devastating tsunami along the coasts of most landmasses
bordering the Indian Ocean, killing more than 225,000 people in eleven countries, and inundating
coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters (100 feet) high. It was one of the deadliest natural
disasters in recorded history. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand were the hardest hit.
